Xander stuffed another cracker into his mouth as he finished his lunch. It hadn’t been much, just some cheese and crackers, but it would be enough to get him through until they stopped for the night.

“So what’d she say to you?” Xander asked, his curious nature getting the better of him. Their little conversation hadn’t gone unnoticed by him.

Charlie gave him a quizzical look as he took a sip of his water. “What do you mean?”

“The Sage, after I had left. I saw you two talking, and I wanted to know what she said to you.”

Charlie shrugged. “Nothing really, just to keep an eye out for you. That’s all.” Charlie shifted uncomfortably, like he was in the hot seat and this was an interrogation. It was obvious there was something Charlie was omitting.

“So I guess that means you’re coming with me on this trip?” Xander held his breath, and his heart rate increased slightly. He hoped Charlie would say yes. Not only did he need his protection, but he really didn’t want them to part ways. He was enjoying Charlie’s company, and that was a rare thing for Xander. He usually didn’t like anybody.

“I guess so,” Charlie said. “I mean, you still have to come back with me to meet with my Alpha. That was the deal, right?”

Xander had completely forgotten about meeting with Charlie’s Alpha. “Y–yeah. That’s right. So… what do you say? Take me to the end of the road, and I’ll head back with you afterward to meet your Alpha?”

Charlie nodded. “Sounds good to me. Hey, how long do you think this trip is going to last anyways?”

Xander pulled out the map the Sage had given him and looked at some of the land markings. “A few days maybe? It looks like we’ll be traveling by foot again, too. It seems to take us through the forest to the outskirts of Lupunar City.”

“Lupunar City? That’s where my Pack lives.” Charlie sounded surprised as he moved closer to get a look at the map in Xander’s hands.

He leaned over and followed the trail the Sage had outlined for them. “Well, talk about going around your ass to get to your elbow. This takes a one-day trip and turns it into three. It would be easier to just cut through here and take a car the rest of the way.” Charlie pointed on the map to indicate where he was talking about.

Xander shook his head. “Remember what the Sage said, we can’t deviate from the map.”

Charlie sighed in obvious frustration. “Fine, but just so you know there’s a much quicker route, and I don’t want you to get your hopes up, but I don’t think there’s anything out there other than my Pack.”

By there, he clearly meant their destination. Xander rolled his eyes, placing the map carefully in his pocket. “Perhaps that’s why we have to go the route the Sage told us to. Maybe it’s something that can only be found by traveling this road.”

Charlie shook his head.
